Part 8 Toby’s Game

            Amy entered the house after calmed down. Toby approached her with his cute look.

            “Ice cream girl, I have something for you.”

            His tone was somewhat suspicious. Amy gave him a scowl.

            “Toby, I am not an ice girl. Please call me, sister or Amy.”

            This spoiled boy should be given a lesson! She thought.

            Toby saw her scornfully. Amy heaved a sigh. Those Chen brothers are weird in their way of interaction with others. She dislikes how Ethan Chen winked at her secretly when they were eating in the dining room, despises Theo for his arrogance and disrespectful, and this little Chen who show his naughty behavior.

            Toby stretched out his hand, made Amy shot a confused look. He pointed his hand using his eyes.

            Without suspicion, she reached out his hand. Toby held her hand as he grinned. Something electrified Amy’s hand and spontaneously she pulled out her hand while she screeched.

            A miniature of a spider fell on the floor. Amy’s eyes widened in shock.

            “Amy dear, what’s happening?” Joanna run in a rush towards the side of house near to garden.

            Almost all people in the family room followed her.

            Amy inhale and exhale deeply. She smiled apologetic before spoke. ”I am really sorry, Aunt Anna. I am just too overreacted.”

            Joanna seemed ignoring her words. Instead, she checked her to find any sign of injures or pains. Amy felt helpless. Maggie looked displeased while Lie Jie and Li Qiang exchanged their glances. Kate shot an envious look and a constant turmoil enraged her heart.

            Toby had secretly taken his fake spider before someone noticed him. “Toby, what’s happening?” Joanna asked him after assured Amy’s condition.

            He shrugged off his shoulders and went out.

            Amy stunned for seconds. This boy is not ashamed at all. She could not believe her encountering three men of Chen family with their weird behaviors.

            Soon, Amy realized that Toby has been blackmailed her with his quiet and indifferent attitudes. He often shows annoyed look whatever she spoke or acted. She tried to suppress her anger and stand still. Ethan observed this whole situation with his mockery written all over his face while Theo had just managed to stay for ten minutes then excused himself to check on pile documents in the study room.

            Amy’s cellphone rang. With an apologetic expression, she swung her steps to the living room.

            “Oh, thanks dear. You call me in the right time. I almost suffocated there.”

            A small chuckle was appeared in the other line. “Seriously? I thought it is too late to stay there. What’s going on?”

            “Well, Chen brothers really drove me crazy. If it is not because of aunty Anna, I would like to punch their faces, especially the oldest one.”

            Carrie let out loud laugh. Amy twitched her eyebrows.

            “You’re laughing? I am suffering here. I hope this meeting would come to the end.” Amy pouted.

            This made her looking cute. Ethan stared at her intently. He followed her steps after few seconds she left the family room and found her standing near the front door with an irritated look in her face.

            She is indecent and a real temper, but her innocent eyes and pure smile betrayed her words. Her gentleness and soft tone towards the person in the line of phone proved her real emotions.

            “This marriage is absolutely a joke. I should find out the way to escape from it. You know I can’t get married with anyone or else I will experience the same as like the past.” Amy said with serious tone. A deep sadness flashed.

            Ethan leaned against the wall next to the door. Suddenly his face became serious with a hint of astonishment.

            “Amy, are you afraid to fall in love again?” Carrie whispered in a concern voice.

            A drop of tears fell on Amy’s cheek. With an obvious sorrow in her trembling voice, she answered, “Carrie, don’t let me experience the hell again. I don’t deserve any happiness. I always dream about my baby.”

            Carrie breathed a deep long sigh. “Dear Amy, it’s just hallucination. How many times I tell you that you didn’t lose any baby?”

            Amy closed her eyes slightly. Tears poured down her cheeks. “I always hear the baby’s voice in my dream and it haunts me. Carrie, this pain is never gone.”

            Carrie inhale and exhale the air helplessly. She curses the two persons whom cause the misery life for Amy.

            Amy hung up the phone with her eyes still closed. Her breathing sounded so desperate.

            Ethan stood upright. His amazement switch to feel pity and curious towards Amy.

            Amy lowered her head. She wiped her tears. Her sobs slowly stopped.

            Ethan just wanted to approach her, a voice interrupted his action. “Ice cream girl, my mom is looking for you.”

            Amy startled a bit. She quickly removed her tears which were left. She stunned when realized Ethan were standing there with unreadable expression.

            Is he listened the conversation? She wondered.

            Without any word, Ethan turned back and left them. Amy felt uneasiness in her chest. However, she didn’t know what to do since that man was silent.

            This uneasy feeling is still lingering in Amy’s mind when her family and she left Chen villa. She ignored the fact that Joanna persuaded her to stay overnight which left Maggie and Kate speechless. Eventually, Joanna relented but she requested her company in the next couple of days for social event.

            Amy tried hiding her mournful feeling. She even succumbed to Joanna’s enthusiasm. Besides, she didn’t dare to stay there since Ethan looked suspicious after caught her words through phone.

            “Sister, may I see what the gift given from aunt Anna?” a soft and self-pampered of Kate snapped her thought.

            Amy looked at her questionably for seconds, before handed over her bag. Kate snatched it enthusiastically. She could not hold back her envy.

            Li Jie didn’t pay attention to their interaction since he was busy with his phone. There were so many deals with work which he handles for. Maggie only shot a brief sidelong before she looked at the views outside window.

            Suddenly, Kate screamed out. All people in the car startled, including the driver who almost slammed the brakes but managed to balance frictions of engine.

            “Sweetheart, what’s wrong?” Maggie asked worriedly as checked her hastily.

            Kate’s face seemed in a terrible terror.

            “I.. a.. a…I touched… I think I touched a…a snake.” Kate stuttered.

            Once again, a scream went out from her mouth. She put her hands on her face.   

            “What?!! Where? How?” Maggie also freaked out.

            “Stop the car.” Ordered Li Jie soon.

            “Get out from the car.” He shouted as jumped out from his seat.

            Amy’s mind went blank while Maggie and Kate got out hurriedly. Li Jie extended his hands and grabbed Amy’s arm to pulled her out. It was very late so there were few cars passing by.

            “Mr. Li…” Their driver approached Li Jie with confusion.

            “Find anything to kill snake in the trunk.” Li Jie said firmly without diverting his stare from inside car. He tried to figure out any movement from snake.

            Maggie and Kate were hugging in terrified feeling. Amy stood behind her father, peeked around the corners. However, after quite some time they didn’t see any sign.

            “Kate, are you sure there is a snake?” Li Jie questioned while still searched for.

            “Yes, dad. It was inside sister’s bag.”

            Kate pointed towards car with her finger. Her answer made four people felt confused. How could a snake sneak into a bag? Moreover, it was impossible a snake to came in a car in the city.

            Feeling something a bit odd, Amy stepped forward to car. Li Jie was shocked when she was approaching into car. He grabbed her arm.

            “Amy, what are you doing?” He tried to pull out his daughter, stupefied by her fearless.

            “I think it is not a snake, Dad.” Amy answered calmly. Even she could feel frightened at the beginning, judging from her sister’s words her fears almost instantly disappeared.

            “Do you mean that I lied whole time?” Kate felt offensive.

            Amy took a glimpse at her, then turned her eyes back to her father.

            “Don’t worry, Dad. It should be something look alike a snake.”

            Then, quickly she looked around back seat. She found a long rubber fake snake lied down in a coil near driver’s seat. When she lifted this and showed it to them, Maggie and Kate shrilled unconsciously.

            “This is fake.” Amy soothed them.

            “Throw it immediately.” Kate shouted uncontrollably as closed her eyes by her hands.

            The fake toys looked so real with the color was black and the length about 30 inches. Li Jie furrowed his eyebrows.

            Who is the heck playing this childish trick?

            Finally, they continued to move forward. Kate was still trembling with Maggie was continuously assuring her, while Amy was looking at outside the window. She presumed this was Toby’s idea since he sat down next to her when she was talking to Joanna.

            Amy smiled bitterly. She did not want this marriage at the first place. She really hated to fall in love so for five years she behaved indifferently towards men.

            “Amy, I never fall in love with you. In fact, for two years I pretended to be like that. Do you think you deserve a love?” A cold tone and hateful look came up to her mind.

            After that her life turned upside down with endless pains. Her happiness shattered into pieces. She was like a robot who was passing through days with automatic program.

Part 7 An Arranged Marriage

             

            Dinner in Chen Residence was full of weird atmosphere.

            Amy sat beside Theo awkwardly while the man himself ignored her presence most of time. Both parents were having a nice chat each other. Ethan, who was sitting in the left side of center table, glanced Amy many times with curiosity. Kate, the other side was resenting for this marriage plan. She imagined herself sitting next to Theo countless time.

            “Amy dear, do you like the meals? I cooked all your favorite food.” Suddenly Joanna spoke, snapped out of Amy’s daydream.

            Amy saw her blankly for second. Obviously, the food tasted delicious, but she was not in a phase to appreciate it.

            “Honey, what’s wrong? Is the food not suited with your taste?” A worry has seen in Joanna’s face.

            Amy shook her head abruptly. A sweet smile was radiated from Joanna made Amy felt guilty. She has never forgotten how Theo’s accusation for the headline news four days ago. She called his secretary many times since she knew Theo always rejected her calls. She requested a meeting in a person with him, but he bluntly refused it. He did not want to create the hype which made people more misunderstand when they were caught in a discussion. She was not enjoying it either.

            This official meeting between families surely did not resolve the problem. This so-called marriage for business would be troublesome since Amy and Theo dislikes each other.

            “Anna, just let her be. She can’t enjoy her food if you always bother her.” Li Qiang reminded Joanna with soft tone.

            “Oh, I am sorry Amy. Auntie always be noisy.”

            “That’s fine, Auntie.” Amy lowered her head and ate her food.

            The clumsy expression of Amy really cracked Ethan up. All attention, except Theo was turned to him swiftly.

            Ethan smiled with meaningful look to Joanna. “Mom, you just realize your noises. How about your nags?”

            Joanna shot her warning eyes. Ethan always teased her with his irksome attitude.

            “Ethan, stop blabbering nonsense.” Li Qiang spoke assertively, shut Ethan mouth.

           Nobody dared to go against the head of Chen family when he spoke. Ethan continued munching his food. Theo did not care the tense air as he was busy eating and putting the food in Toby’s plate. Toby looked him with obvious admiration.

            “Theo, you should put food on Amy’s plate too. I will look after Toby.” Joanna advised his son to give his attention to Amy.

            “Mom, please. Just eat your food.” Theo said it flatly.

            Joanna took a deep breath. She felt helpless about Theo’s coldness.

            After dinner, a serious atmosphere fulfilled the family room. In the beginning, two elder men was talking about their cooperation and future business, then suddenly Joanna brought the marriage issue. Li Jie nodded about the arrangement while Li Qiang teased his excited wife. Maggie, who was sitting beside Li Jie, only gave few comments.

            Theo was busy with his phone, so he looked like ignoring his around, including Kate’s seduction. Amy dazed since she was thinking to escape from this depressing situation. This could not had escaped from Ethan’s sight who was sitting in the other side of sofa near Kate.

            “Amy, you won’t get happiness in your life” a sharp pain was piercing as she thought her past-memories.

            She fell in love deeply with someone, but she was betrayed till her heart froze. Li Jie, her father accused her for being pregnant before marriage. She left the city with broken heart and had spent days abroad in despair for a year. She almost drove crazy facing endless psychotherapy.

            Her awareness was awakened when Carrie showed their happy photos in a desperate voice one day. She even went further to jump to the beach even though she got trauma of drowning in the water. Then they hugged and cried for long time until Amy apologized several times with tears flooded her face.

When Li Jie brought this issue, she always tried to convince him to marry Kate with Theo, reminded him about how Amy were disgraceful Li family with her shameless action. However, Li Jie insisted and spoke his final decision.

            “No, I think it is better not to rush the marriage. Besides, they need more time to know each other.”

            Joanna nodded in agreement. Theo could not control his calmness. A sudden move from him attract the elder’s attention.

            “I am really sorry, Uncle Li, Auntie Maggie, Dad, Mom. I need to discuss something with Ms. Li.”

         Joanna has just wanted to speak, but Theo quickly grabbed Amy’s hand and bowed down. Amy was dumbfounded when Theo pulled her away from their parents. Kate almost jump out, wanted to follow them but Ethan held back her wrist.

            “Do you want to be the third wheel?” He prevented Kate to step further.

            Kate felt frightened when Ethan’s stern face like a burning fire.

            In the garden, after vanishing from the elders, Theo let go off Amy’s hand. He turned to face Amy.

            “Ms. Li, I had clearly told you that I don’t expect we see each other.”

            Amy trembled as Theo’s coldness pass through her spines. Theo noticed the fear written all over her face. The dim light in the garden made her sparkling.

            Theo remained silent as he observed Amy with a sudden interest. Her big crystal eyes were the most intriguing whether she was annoyed or smiled.

            “Mr. Chen, I would like to discuss about this situation, but you refused my call. Do you think I didn’t try my best to destroy the plan? I would rather be a single forever than get married with you.”

             Amy lifted her chin, bravely staring Theo with her fierce eyes. Her chest seemed breathing up and down.

            Theo flabbergasted. This woman was totally changed from seconds ago. Has she not realized how many marriage proposals coming to his family? On the top of that, wherever he goes, many women would seduce him involuntarily.

           A flashback crossed in his mind about David’s investigation report. This was impossibly the same woman.

            Theo put both his hands into the pocket of his trouser. He looked at Amy with relaxed face.

            “I don’t know what kind of tricks you were playing that my mom is so fond of you. It is really hard to solve the problem if my mom insists about you being her future daughter-in-law.”

             Amy rolled her eyes. A night breeze gusted up her delicate face. She felt cold since only wearing a thin dress, so she folded her arms in front of her chest.

            “Well, Mr. Chen, even if I tell you the truth you won’t believe in me anyway. How about you find yourself a girlfriend and marry her?”

            Her words provoked his anger. In a blink of eyes, Theo was standing so close to Amy and holding both her wrists forcefully until she twitched her lip.

            “Don’t ever mention about a girlfriend in front of me.” Theo said it in dangerous tone.

            Amy’s heart was beating so fast with this closeness. Theo’s breath was sending a strange sensation in her ears. He bended down while was whispering words.

            Amy nodded panicky. She really wanted to move away, however a masculine smell from Theo’s body enchanted her mind.

            When she raised her head, Theo was staring her intently. Amy gulped nervously. Under the light of full moon, she must admit Theo’s face and height is above average. Although he was wearing a white shirt, this could not hide his well-built muscles.

            Amy quickly lowered her head and spoke in trembling voice. “Mr. Chen, I understand, so please move out.”

            Theo smiled devilishly. He let go of her wrists and lifted her chin instead. Amy was shocked. Her lip was opened a half way. A sweet fragrance fulfilled the air. Out of the blue, Theo felt a sudden desire to kiss her lip.

            Without thinking, Theo pressed her dainty lip with his. It tasted sweet and intoxicating. He deepened his kiss, making Amy’s mind became blank. Her body was being stiff, and her legs weakened. She held on Theo’s chest. This small touch made Theo kissed her until she was breathless.

            Amy pushed Theo hard. An anger, surprise, and bitterness were carved in her eyes.

            “That’s your punishment.”

            “Mom, I will be an obedient son for you.” The boy suddenly interrupted Joanna’s complaints.

            An evening came soon. Li family arrived at Chen residence.

         Joanna welcomed them with her bright smile while Li Qiang showed his calm demeanor, but soon he broke it as meeting with Li Jie’s gaze. Maggie and Kate suppressed their hates when Joanna was hugging Amy warmly and enthusiastic way.

            “Amy dear, you are so beautiful.” Joanna exclaimed in delight.

            Amy’s face blushed. Indeed, she was beautiful with long navy blue and lace shoulder straps. The blue small tail tied her slender waist and her hair was an up do style, encircled by white pearl hair clips.

            Ethan stunned for a second. He had never met an innocent look and pure eyes like her. Certainly, she was not his type, but something magically attracted his curiosity. He then glanced another girl beside Amy. This girl looked gorgeous with burgundy off-shoulder dress which the length only reached an two inches from her knees. Her wavy long hair fell in sexy look and her pinky lips would invite any men to kiss her wildly.

         Ethan grinned which made all eyes turned to him. Joanna shot a warning through her eyes. Ethan suddenly stopped chuckling. Accidentally, his eyes met Amy’s confused look. Once again, he felt something strange tingling with excitement.

            All eyes looked at each other questioningly. The sudden memory struck Amy.

            “You are that a little boy.” Surprise fulfilled Amy.

            “I am not a little boy.” Toby pouted.

            Amy burst into a laughter. “Yeah, I am really sorry.”

            Joanna stepped in. “Amy dear, did you know our Toby?”

            “No, auntie Chen. We just met once in the supermarket a couple days ago.”

            Joanna’s eyes widened when realization came up. “Wow, dear. This should be a fate.”

            Maggie was more irritated. In the front door, she felt agitated when saw Joanna’s affection towards Amy. Then this circumstance turned her hopes upside down. Meanwhile, Kate almost released her envious feeling which seemed burn inside her heart.

            Li Jie and Li Qiang exchanged glances. They smiled understandably.

            “Hmm, Mrs. Chen, we have something to give as small gift.” Maggie interrupted Joanna.

            She winked an eye to Kate. Her daughter caught her intention, then stepped forward and pushed Amy secretly, so she would be closer to Joanna. With sweet smile, she pretended being elegant and fine lady. Amy breathed deeply.

            “Oh, thank you Maggie. Please call me Anna. We are soon to be in-laws, so no need being formal.”

            Kate clenched her fist. Joanna was kind and friendly, but her attitude was only affectionate towards Amy.

          “Amy dear, what is on you? Is that a gift too?” Joanna felt curious from the start when glanced Amy holding a big bag. She was too excited to keep up with others, forgetting it for a while.

            A shy face was flashed. Amy looked down and handed in the bag.

            “Auntie Chen, this …”

            “Anna, this is a cake.” Maggie snatched the bag and gave it to Joanna.

            “Oh wow. Please don’t bother to do it. We are family after all.”

           When Joanna stretched her hand, Maggie pull out a squared box from inside bag. Ethan laughed so hard when was seeing the brown box with giant blue ribbon wrapped it.

            Confusion has seen in Joanna’s face.

            “Did a shop cake sell this box? There is no brand name on it.”

            Maggie smiled wickedly in secret. Amy’s cheek reddened. She squeezed her hand nervously.

           “Oh, Amy did not buy it. She asked our house helper to make it.” Maggie glanced Amy with motherly look, expecting Joanna would be disappointed.

            Joanna’s face looked neutral. “Thank you, sweetheart. Please enjoy the house for a moment. I will check the kitchen.”     

            Ethan was standing next to Amy’s embarrassing face.

            “You know, my mom really hates no sincere gift. You just made one point for that.” His whisper tingled Amy’s ear.

            Kate looked at them jealously. She felt flattered when Ethan stared her attentively before. She was acting shy to attract him. Meanwhile, Toby paid no attention since he still held a grudge towards Amy. He was watching his favorite channel.

            Li Jie and Li Qiang soon were immersed in business talk, so they did not see the atmosphere. Maggie chosen to follow Joanna to earn good impression.    

          Amy glared Ethan without fear. She leaned back to create a distance between them. Ethan smiled naughty. Obviously, as a man with many girlfriends, he knew that girl did not like his playfulness side.

            “Hmmm, Ethan. Just leave her and talk to me. She is always serious about anything.”

            Kate spoke flirtatiously as was grasping Ethan’s arm. Her voice sounded sexy and soft. Ethan transferred his attention to Kate. Amy snicker at their interaction and she has just stepped up when the sound of arriving car was heard from outside.

            “I think Theo is coming, pal.” Li Qiang spoke to Li Jie.

            Joanna rushed ahead. All people there were standing in that room.

       A handsome and tall figure with black suit was dragged by Joanna. His face looked cold and expressionless.

            “What is happening here, Mom? I thought you are sick like you said in the phone.”

            Theo observed this situation with an irritated look.

           “If I said the truth, would you come here? You barely visited your parents.” Joanna responded defensively. Her face looked bitter.

            She has still not forgiven his son for his rude behavior after the marriage plan leaked out to public. Theo confronted her after back from his business trip in Japan. Their quarrel ended up with Theo gave in on her mother stubbornness. However, the next two days, Theo blocked any call from Joanna and stayed in his penthouse instead.

            Joanna was furious, then asked her husband to lie about her being sick. This hide and seek has always happened when Joanna wanted Theo to fulfil her request while the latter against the idea.  

            Although from outside Theo looked so cold and heartless, he eventually always granted Joanna’s wish.

            “Theo, give your respect to Uncle Li.” Commanded Li Qiang firmly.

            Theo sighed, but his expression remained cold.

            “Uncle Li, how are you?” He bowed down with respect.

            Amy was amazed. Never in her mind, this cold icy man would greet others politely. Kate instantly tidied up her hair and stood up excitedly. She looked up at him appealingly. Ethan is also handsome and attractive, but Theo has like noble man who is outstanding and powerful. She heard many achievements of him in business world in five years.

            “Big bro, you are coming.”

          Toby was running to hug him. Theo smiled softly as he was stroking his brother’s hair. His coldness melted through small dimples.

            Theo furrowed his brows.

            “Ethan, stop being ridiculous.” Joanna cut off Theo’s mockery.

            “Theo dear, this is Auntie Maggie … This is Kate, the younger daughter… Then, you had met Amy before.” Joanna introduced three beautiful women.

            Amy looked uncomfortable. She avoided Theo’s eyes unconsciously.

            Joanna pushed Amy to stand in front of Theo.

            “Dear, Amy looks very beautiful today right? I bet many men approaching her.”

            Amy was speechless when Joanna boasted about her in Theo’s face. She felt ashamed as Theo was observing her from head to toe.

           Theo could not believe his sight that the woman is front of him has transformed differently from the first meeting. She was not type of extraordinarily beautiful woman, but there was something which could lure people’s attention to her if they have seen her longer.
